“Amen, Amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat. But, if it dies, it produces much fruit” (John 12:24). Koinonia is about dying to our sinful ways and rising as a new creation in Christ. This dying and rising takes place within the context of a Catholic faith community. This community calls each participant to a true conversion of heart and encourages him or her to continue to live that conversion and bear fruit for the Kingdom of God.
Koinonia is the Greek word for “community.” These retreats were established as a Catholic Christian weekend experience for college students. The Koinonia retreat weekend is an experience based on the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ—His life, death, and resurrection. The themes for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are “DIE,” “RISE,” and “GO.” DIE DAY is a re-enactment of the Passion of Christ; RISE Day is a celebration of Christ’s resurrection; and GO Day is an invitation to go forth and live the Gospel as the apostles did at Pentecost. Through these experiences of Christian witnessing, faith encounters, discussions, and Christian communal living, Koinonia functions to create, develop, and build Christian community and attitudes and to help prepare individuals for a future role in the Church. Though the retreat is offered from a Catholic perspective, non-Catholics are welcome to attend.
